Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple)

Harmandir Sahib which has got its English name ‘Golden Temple’ from its outer covering of real gold is a Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. It was built by Fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun in December 1588. The Gurudwara is surrounded by lake from all the sides. The architecture of Gurudwara is different from others in a way that we need to go down the steps to enter the Gurudwara and it has four entrance doors instead of one to show the acceptance of Sikh religion for the people of all religion..
Harmandir Sahib has always faced threat from Muslim invaders and it has been attacked several times and rebuilt again. The gold plating on the Gurudwara has been done by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1830. The land for Harmandir Sahib was gifted by Akbar to Bhani on her marriage who was the daughter of Third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das and wife of Fourth Guru, Guru Ram Das.
