Gomteshwara: Seven Wonders

Gomteshwara

Bahubali Bhagwan was the second son of the first Jain Tirthankar 1008 Bhagwan Rishabhdev. He was the first ever human to attain Kewal Gyan and be worshiped like a god though he was not Tirthankar. There are 24 Tirthankar in Jains among which Bhagwan Rishabhdev, also known as Adinath Bhagwan was the first. In Jain Shastras, it has been told that everything depends on our own deeds and no one including God is not to be blamed for any good or bad that happens to us. Being born as a Tirthankar is also a result of our works in pre life. It is told that it is not possible to attain the position of god before being born as Tirthankar. Though Bhagwan Bahubali was not a Tirthankar, he became god because of strict tapasya for years. He kept meditating in the standing position without food and water for years without moving a little. He was so still that ants thought him to be a still structure and started to live on him. He was completely covered with dust and veins. The structure at Gomteshwara is a depiction of how he looked after years of meditation.
He had 98 younger brothers who took diksha before him with Adinath Bhagwan. He had an ego that he would not worship his younger brothers and hence decided to attain Kewal Gyan on his own. This ego was the only obstacle in his path and he couldn’t attain Kewal Gyan even after years of harsh meditation. When his two sisters asked him to leave the ego and pride at the signal from Adinath Bhagwan, he let his ego and pride and go away and instantly gained Kewal Gyan. He even got Nirvana and attained Moksha before his father and became the first god to be worshiped.
